There is no doubt; social media is here to stay. Not only has it revolutionized how we communicate on a personal level, but it has also changed how businesses interact with their customers. There is an expectation now that you have to have an online presence as a business, and if you don’t, your success will suffer.
This can seem pretty daunting if you’re not used to using these platforms to communicate. Social media marketing is all about connecting with your target market, engaging them and getting your business noticed (in a positive way!) But how do you stand out? How do you appropriately and effectively present yourself online?
While there are no easy answers, there ARE things that you can be doing as a business owner to create buzz online and start using social media to your advantage:
Create And Use Hashtags For A Broader Audience
Have you ever seen a Tweet or Facebook update that included a hashtag at the end of it? Some examples would be #smallbiz #marketing. These might seem pointless or annoying, but hash tags actually have a ton of potential for connecting people online.
How do they work? If you post an update on social media and include #WhiteRock at the end, anybody who clicks on that hashtag will see your update, whether they are connected to you or not. It’s a great way to reach an audience that otherwise may not have seen your message. Some additional hashtags for White Rock area include #surrey, #vancouver, #canada, #crescentbeach, #eastbeach, etc….
You can also come up with unique hash tags based on a particular event or sale. Encourage people to use the hashtag — starting with your employees, staff, friends and family! The more people see them, the more they will want to know about your company, product, or event.
It’s Hard To Resist A Good Contest!
Social media contests are popular for good reason — they work! Encourage people to follow you on social media by giving them a chance to win something. Ideally this should be a product or service that you offer. If that’s not possible (for example if you’re a real estate agent), then offer something appealing like a popular electronic gadget or a ‘Night On The Town’ with gift cards to local establishments or events.
There are rules to running social media contests on social media, so be sure that you’re aware of each platform and what they require. You will also want to keep in mind your end goal. Are you hoping to get more followers? Then require people follow your profile in order to enter. Are you trying to build an email list? Then you’ll want to be sure you’re gathering email addresses as part of your contest entry!
Make Sure Your Followers Are Rewarded
Contests are a great way to boost your followers or your list, but what about the people who are already following you and interacting? They may be your most valuable assets! Find a creative way to reward the customers who are interacting with you online. Maybe offer a 10% discount to a specially chosen ‘Follower of the week” and then give them a shout-out online. Or you can send a coupon code to anyone who retweets one of your posts. When individuals post about your company or about an event or product, their friends will see it, and the friends of their friends will see it, and it will have a chain-like reaction ultimately exposing more people to your company.
